Just 25 kilometers from Windhoek lies the Daan Viljoen Nature Reserve, one of Namibia’s smallest wildlife parks—but certainly not short on experiences. Spanning around 4,000 hectares across the gentle hills of the Khomas Hochland, the park exudes a sense of tranquility. With no large predators present, the area can safely be explored on foot. Walking along its quiet trails, you may encounter baboons, gnus, impalas, zebras, and even giraffes. The fresh air, hilltop views, and closeness to nature quickly pull you out of everyday life.
Another special spot in the area is Penduka Village, located on the shores of the Goreangab Reservoir. This is a community initiative run by women, offering accommodation, a restaurant, and a variety of programs for visitors. Women from the Katutura district create handmade textiles, jewelry, and decorative items, and guests are invited to try their hand at crafts such as batik or jewelry making. In the evenings, you can even cook together over an open fire using fresh, local ingredients. Sustainability is a key aspect of the village’s operations—for example, hot water is provided using renewable energy.
Together, these two places offer a perfect introduction to the Windhoek region: a meeting of wild nature and living communities, where the landscape and the stories of its people become an integral part of the journey.
Located in Namibia’s Otjozondjupa region, the Otjiwa Wildlife Reserve spans some 12,000 hectares of open bush savanna and gently rolling plains. Upon arrival, the peaceful atmosphere is immediately felt: under the vast African sky, the horizon seems endless, while giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and rhinos roam freely across the reserve. On a guided game drive, you’ll get a closer look at the area’s rich wildlife, and on a walking safari, you can notice the smaller details of the landscape—the scent of the dry earth, the soft rustle of the bushes, or the fresh tracks of animals.
The day also features a special culinary experience: a two-hour interactive cooking class where one of Otjiwa’s chefs demonstrates several signature dishes of Southern African cuisine. The dishes are then enjoyed together, accompanied by homemade drinks and dessert.
Cultural experiences in the area are completed with a visit to Ombu Village, located on the way to the Okonjima Nature Reserve. The village serves as a living museum, showcasing the traditions of the Herero people. Built around an old manor house, Ombu Village consists of nine traditional-style buildings that reflect the architectural eras of the past 150 years. At the local gift shop, visitors can choose from handmade Herero crafts created by artisans from nearby villages. Ombu Village thus offers not only insight into the local culture but also supports the livelihoods of the community.
Southern Etosha is located in the northwestern part of Namibia, directly along the southern border of Etosha National Park. One of the park’s most well-known entrances is Andersson Gate, which provides easy access to the area. Today’s program includes a visit to a nearby reserve, offering insight into the rich wildlife of the Namibian savanna. There is a good chance of encountering lions, giraffes, elephants, as well as both white and black rhinoceroses, while many antelope species and zebras are also commonly seen across the savanna. Exploring the reserve is usually done on a game drive, but shorter guided nature walks are also available. One of the day’s most beautiful moments is the sunset, when the light gradually transforms the endless Namibian landscape into a golden hue.
Swakopmund is located on Namibia’s northern coast, and from the very first moment, you can feel that it is a special place. Here, the German colonial past meets the African environment in a unique way: palm-lined streets, historic buildings, seaside promenades, and a calm, slightly European atmosphere define the town. Thanks to its proximity to the ocean, the climate is also milder than in Namibia’s interior, making it a popular destination for relaxation or exploration.
Today we remain in Swakopmund for a special marine adventure. In the morning, we board a boat and head out into the Atlantic Ocean for a dolphin-watching excursion. We will spend the morning at sea, with a good chance of seeing dolphins and other marine creatures in their natural habitat. The boat trip continues into the early afternoon. Lunch is served on board, while the open waters and coastal scenery around us make the experience even more memorable. The fresh sea air and the ocean’s calm rhythm make this day truly unforgettable.
Today we say goodbye to Namibia and begin our journey home. Over the past days, we have gathered countless extraordinary experiences: exploring the endless dunes of the desert, encountering the wildlife of the savanna, and marveling at the stunning landscapes, while meeting local women who shared insights into their culture and daily lives. This marks the conclusion of a rich, discovery-filled journey, leaving us with many memories and inspiring stories to carry home.
