Traveling to the Tahiti Islands is not simply an exotic experience—it is an encounter with a culture that is alive, breathing, and passed down through generations. In the world of the Ma’ohi heritage, stories of gods, warriors, and legends shape daily life, where music, dance, and art are not mere spectacles but a natural part of existence. On our women’s journey, we engage with this living cultural environment—with respect, curiosity, and openness. Sports also hold deep roots: spear throwing was regarded as the sport of the gods, surfing was the privilege of kings, while va’a canoe races and stone lifting were key communal events.
We will explore their historical and cultural significance and how they continue to thrive in the daily life of the island communities today. Traditional singing and dance are present at every festival; on Tahiti, ’ori Tahiti—the dance expressing powerful feminine energy—remains at the heart of communal identity. On Moorea and Huahine, we are welcomed with gentle melodies and graceful movements, where visitors are not outsiders but invited participants. Polynesian cuisine varies from island to island, yet everywhere it reflects respect for tradition: we will taste ka’a ka’u made from breadfruit, po’i from taro, and tuamotui avaro bread, all staple dishes at festive tables.
Tattooing has been part of Tahitian culture for centuries, with each design carrying meaning—signifying lineage, family bonds, or life paths. We will also learn about the pu fenua ritual, in which a newborn’s placenta is buried at the base of a tree, symbolizing the connection between humans and the land, the importance of roots, and a sense of belonging. Tiki statues hold sacred significance, and families are often protected and strengthened by an animal totem, such as a shark or a dog.
This journey is not merely an exploration of a distant island world—it is a connection with each other, with nature, and with a culture that is both ancient and vibrantly contemporary, experienced within a women’s community, slowly, mindfully, and through authentic encounters.
