SECRETS OF ZANZIBAR

WAVES, SPICES, WOMEN'S STORIES

January 10-21, 2027

A unique 10-day journey to Zanzibar awaits you — one that embraces breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and the inspiring world of local women’s communities. This trip goes beyond a traditional holiday: it offers genuine encounters, deeper connections, and sustainable experiences that will leave a lasting impact.

Discover the turquoise waves of the ocean on a snorkeling adventure and boat trip in the Menai Bay, cycle through lush spice plantations where the scents of cinnamon, vanilla, and clove linger in the air, and then rest and learn on one of the world’s most unique ecotourism island — where pristine nature and human harmony create a truly special experience. Wander through mangroves and tropical forests, where every step reveals a new secret of the island’s soul.
The program also includes yoga and meditation to help you tune in — body and mind — to the rhythm of the island. As a volunteer, you’ll get a glimpse into the life of a local community, working side by side in everyday tasks — and in return, experience the warmth of Swahili hospitality through a shared meal. We’ll learn the beauty rituals of local women, take part in artisan workshops, and immerse ourselves in the flavors of island cuisine, where every bite tells a new story.

This journey is not only about the sights, but about discovering the world together — through the lens of women and community. At its heart lie sustainability, respect for local values, and the empowerment of women — so that every moment becomes both a gift to ourselves and a contribution to the community that welcomes us.

Plan B — B as in Brave

Day 1 – Arrival & Finding Harmony by the Ocean

  • After your arrival, the afternoon is all about slowing down and tuning in — giving yourself time to feel the island’s tranquility and the closeness of the ocean.
We close the day with a unique experience: sunset yoga and meditation on the beach, accompanied by the sound of the waves, as we share our first moment of deep connection together.
  • The evening ends with a delightful seaside dinner at the hotel restaurant, featuring sustainably prepared local dishes.

Day 2 – World Heritage, Swahili Flavors & Ocean Bliss

  • We begin the day with a fascinating UNESCO World Heritage walk through Stone Town. Wandering its narrow alleys, historic houses, and hidden courtyards, we uncover the stories of Zanzibar’s past — where Arab, Indian, and African influences blend into a rich cultural tapestry.
  • Lunch awaits on a charming rooftop terrace, where we taste authentic Swahili dishes while soaking in sweeping views of the city.
  • The afternoon is reserved for pure relaxation: time by the ocean at your own pace — whether swimming, sunbathing, or simply enjoying a good book with the sea breeze.
  • The evening closes with another delightful seaside dinner at the hotel restaurant, serving locally sourced dishes prepared with sustainability in mind.

Days 3–4 – Exploring Chumbe Island’s Eco-Wonders & Nurturing Wellness

Over these two days, our group divides in two so everyone can enjoy the experiences at a calm, unhurried pace — and the next day, we switch, ensuring that all participants live both adventures fully.

  • Chumbe Island Eco-Adventure
A true highlight: snorkeling in the dazzling coral reefs, where the vibrant marine life creates unforgettable moments of wonder. We then join a guided conservation walk to discover the island’s unique ecology and its inspiring sustainable practices. Before returning by boat, there’s time to stop at the eco-shop — leaving the island recharged by the power of nature and the sea.
  • Wellness & Self-Care Journey
A full day dedicated to body and soul. We take part in a natural cosmetics workshop, creating beauty products from local ingredients. A 30-minute soothing massage follows, releasing tension and inviting deep relaxation. At midday, a garden-fresh BBQ lunch becomes the centerpiece of the day — a feast that delights the senses while honoring sustainability.
  • Each evening, we gather again for a cozy seaside dinner at the hotel restaurant, savoring locally inspired dishes prepared with care and respect for the environment.

The next day, the groups swap — so everyone experiences both sides of island bliss: the call of the ocean and the gentle embrace of wellness.

Day 5 – Spices, Forests & Countryside Flavors on Two Wheels

  • Today we set out on a cycling journey through the spice plantations, where the scents of cinnamon, clove, vanilla, and cardamom accompany us along the way. As we ride, we not only discover the world of these precious plants but also catch glimpses of the daily lives of locals who have nurtured and protected these plantations for generations.
  • Our path leads us into the Masingini Forest, where shaded trails invite us to explore the island’s natural treasures and lush vegetation. This forest is a true sanctuary — with the songs of birds and the deep green of the trees creating a captivating atmosphere.
  • Midday brings a rustic countryside lunch, prepared with fresh local ingredients — simple yet rich in flavor, capturing the very essence of rural Zanzibar.
  • In the evening, we gather again at the hotel restaurant for a seaside dinner, where sustainably prepared local dishes are served, rounding out the day with gentle ocean breezes and island flavors.

This day offers a perfect harmony of movement, nature, and local culture — a journey that awakens all the senses.

Day 6 – Secrets of Seaweed and Coastal Flavors

  • As part of today’s program, we will visit the Seaweed Center, where local women will show us how they harvest and process seaweed, and how they use it to create cosmetics and natural beauty products. This unique experience offers a glimpse into the life of a women’s community that builds livelihoods and keeps traditions alive through sustainability and creativity.
  • After the morning experience, we will enjoy a light yet flavor-rich lunch by the shore, where the harmony of fresh ingredients and the closeness of the sea complete the moment.
  • We will end the day with a shared dinner at the hotel. The dishes will be prepared by local school students as part of a cooking class – making each bite a reflection of both learning and storytelling.

Day 7 – Red Colobus Monkeys and Nature Trails

  • We begin the day with an exciting excursion to the Jozani Forest, home to the famous red colobus monkeys found only here. During our walk through the lush forest, we will also discover unique plants, birds, and the fascinating wildlife of the mangrove ecosystem. Thanks to its unique biodiversity, this forest is considered one of Zanzibar’s greatest natural treasures.

  • Our journey then takes us on the Pete Nature Explorer tour, where we can experience the untouched inland landscapes, verdant scenery, and glimpses of local daily life. This program offers the chance to slow down and connect more closely with the island’s nature and culture.

  • Along the way, we will enjoy a delicious Swahili lunch prepared with fresh local ingredients, perfectly complementing the day’s explorations.

  • The day concludes with a relaxed dinner at the hotel, where fresh, locally sourced dishes will be served.

Day 8 – Ocean Adventures in Menai Bay

  • One of the highlights of the trip is a full-day boat excursion to the Menai Bay Marine Park, where we discover the most beautiful side of Zanzibar’s marine world. From the boat, we can watch dolphins playfully accompanying us, and later we’ll have the chance to go snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters among colorful fish and corals.
  • During the day, we stop at a magical sandbank where, for a short while, it feels like we are at the center of the world, just to ourselves. Here, a freshly prepared lunch made from local ingredients awaits us, enhanced by the unique atmosphere of the seaside.
  • In the afternoon, we explore the mangroves, gaining insight into one of nature’s most remarkable ecosystems. Mangrove forests are not only vital for biodiversity but also play a key role in protecting the coastline.
  • In the evening, we enjoy a shared dinner back at the hotel, once again filled with local flavors and a warm, friendly atmosphere.

Day 9 – Sunset SUP & Shared Cooking: Experience and Responsibility

  • The day begins at a special Swahili cooking school, where local women guide us through the secrets of Zanzibari cuisine. We learn how to use the spices, prepare authentic dishes together, and then enjoy the fruits of our labor in a lively, communal meal. This program is not just a culinary experience — it’s a genuine cultural encounter that brings us closer to everyday life on the island.
  • In the afternoon, we turn toward nature: stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) among the mangroves at sunset. Gliding across the water, we enjoy the breathtaking scenery while actively contributing to its care by collecting litter, helping to preserve the cleanliness of the beaches and mangrove forests. This activity perfectly combines movement, immersion in nature, and sustainable responsibility.

Day 10 – Volunteer Experiences & Community Connection

On the final day of our journey, we have the opportunity to give back some of what the island has shared with us. We participate in a 3–4 hour light community service activity with local nonprofit organizations. Tasks may vary: helping beautify the environment, tidying community spaces, or supporting educational programs.

  • This day is all about voluntourism — combining connection, community support, and leaving a meaningful impact. As we work alongside locals, we not only help but also learn, gaining insight into their stories, challenges, and joys.
  • The day concludes with a relaxed dinner at the hotel, featuring fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

It’s a fitting close to the journey — a day when we don’t just take experiences home with us, but leave a part of ourselves behind through our hearts and hands.

Day 11 – Departure

After breakfast, we say farewell to Zanzibar and the special experiences of the past days. The shared moments, encounters with local communities, and the magic of nature and culture will stay with us. Transfer to the airport and departure home — carrying inspiration, new friendships, and memories that will live inside of us far beyond the journey itself.
